Dear Engaged Couples- It’s here! Finally, gays and lesbians have a legal right to marry and equally happily, I have the privilege and honor to be able to marry them! Yes, the laws regarding marriage have changed, thanks to a Supreme Court ruling and also thanks to Virginia Attorney General, Mark Herring. I personally must also thank the Presbyterian Church, USA (PCUSA). That church ordained me. This summer, it made an authoritative ruling that if the state in which a pastor is certified to perform weddings allows same sex couples to marry, then that ordained and state-certified -pastor may indeed marry them. Yesterday I called the Presbytery office just to make sure. It was just that unbelievable to me.
Today a same sex couple called to ask if I might officiate at their wedding. I “blessed their union” last year. So glad that they asked me to officiate at this second, legal exchange of marriage vows. I told them I would consider it an honor–and it is.
Congratulations to gays and lesbians who have fought the fight, and finally won. Sometimes the arc of history does indeed bend toward justice.
